Doubt: A Parable
by: John Patrick Shanley
Unrealsed Scenic Design
Designer Concept:
John Shanley’s Doubt: A Parable is a four-character play about when an uncertainty strikes a young sister who recently started teaching at the school. She is concerned that the relationship between a priest and a student may have become inappropriate and confides this fear to the principal. Learning this concern, she becomes determined to find out the truth about what happened and to protect the boy.
The design of the play is based around the sets revolve. While scenes are playing in the foreground, the actors not in that scene can be acting in the background with minute tasks such as filing paperwork, or gardening. The intimacy of the set easily shows the world that these three main characters live in, and also allows for great storytelling for all the cast to interact with. The sets revolve creates a seamless world where every characters action has influence on the world as a whole.
